LEADER AND FOUNDER OF AIR ASIA
·
Tony
Fernandes was initially in the music industry. When it failed, he decided to
make a clean break. Tony left his job to pursue his childhood dream, which is
to set up Asia’s first ever low cost airline.
·
Mr
Fernandes purchased Air Asia from a Malaysian government-owned company in
September 2001 for 25 pence. Air Asia was severely indebted at that time. Tony
started to reform the airline as a short-haul low cost carrier, similar to
those operating in the west.
·
Tony’s
decision lead to the development of short-haul flights around Asia and he saw
his business expanding rapidly. The company, then grew from two planes in 2002
to a fleet of 86 planes flying 30 million people around the world.
