Air Asia is a huge company with a lot of employees. Employees are indeed essential for a company to be successful. According to Tony Fernandes, he wanted a company where people can pursue their dreams. “The culture that we have stems from the fact that we want openness and we want people to be creative and passionate about what they do. In order to do that, we’ve got to inspire them.” Allstar (what Air Asia calls its team members) love their jobs at Air Asia due to the environment where everyone can learn and pursue their passions. Air Asia has a very team-orientated corporate culture. Tony’s employees understand the company’s   strategy and actively focus on maintaining low costs and high productivity. Tony motivates his employees by awarding bonuses based on each employee’s contribution to Air Asia’s productivity, and expects to increase loyalty through its ESOS [employee share ownership scheme] which will be given to all employees. Tony also provides his employees with non- financial rewards such as free flights. This will indirectly develop an intrinsic motivation in the employees. This type of management inspires open communication which creates a vibrant working environment. The employees can communicate directly with Tony and provide suggestions on how Air Asia can be more productive and efficient.

  1. In my opinion, Air Asia has a very interesting culture as all of them seem to work well together. Tony's motivational style is also good but it can be enhanced. Compared to Malaysia Airlines Services (MAS) where special awards are given to employees who perform well, Air Asia can improve. I think it will be better for Tony to give out awards to his employees who work hard as this will indirectly motivate them as well as the other employees to work harder in future.
